On Saturday March 21st (8 PM) biographer Johan Bakker will talk about the short life of the American singer (1963-1996). ‘Bakker has written an extraordinarily poignant biography (Behind the Rainbow / Eva Cassidy, de biografie). He presents his research in an excellent style and he interprets those he interviewed, and who knew Eva Cassidy, as people of flesh and blood: with affection but with an eye for their faults as well. That he admires Eva Cassidy is obvious. That he maintains his journalistic independence proves his craftsmanship. Both components make sure that you read through this biography with bated breath and with an occasional lump in your throat,’ writes Eric Palmen on his Biografieportaal.
On Sunday March 22nd Margriet Sjoerdsma and her band (featuring Dan Cassidy) will do two tribute concerts (2.30 AM and 8.30PM). Dan Cassidy lives alternately in Iceland and Great-Britain where he forms a duo with folksinger and guitarist James Hickman. The violinist is happy that Eva’s music has been recognized in the Netherlands: ‘This project (which started in 2014) gives me the chance to play on the continent of Europe for an attentively listening audience and that is a good thing.’ Margriet Sjoerdsma, Arie Storm and Cord Heineking recorded the album A Tribute to Eva Cassidy; Dan Cassidy added his violin parts in Iceland. The last words that Eva spoke to her brother were: ‘You are a good musician and you can play with anyone.’ What a privilege that Dan Cassidy does so with a Dutch band. Margriet Sjoerdsma and her band have continued their tour since 25 January 2015.
