‘The Essence of Eva’ premiered at Galway Film Fleadh

Last weekend the long-awaited documentary The Essence of Eva premiered. The audience present at the Pálás Theatre at the Galway Film Fleadh responded enthusiastically, with some even calling the documentary made by Malcolm Willis and Alex Fegan the best of the entire festival!

Afterwards, visitors could ask questions to the Irish filmmakers. Eva’s cousin Laura Bligh had come to Galway on behalf of the family. She said Eva’s parents, who had seen the film before, were very happy with it.

Previous documentaries, such as Timeless Voice, were mainly about the efforts that the record company, the radio and the television had made in Eva’s posthumous success. In the Essence of Eva, Fegan and Willis focus on the person that Eva was. Both her talents as a guitarist and singer are discussed. The documentary also zooms in on the visual art she created. After all, the film is named after one of Eva Cassidy’s paintings.

Eva’s fellow musicians are featured, her family and some of her fans. Insightful are Mick Fleetwood and Sting’s views on Eva Cassidy’s music and her ability to improve well-known songs. The documentary includes new audio- and video material featuring the world’s most versatile singer. Whether and when the documentary film will be shown in the rest of the world depends on the interest of international film theatres and media. Fingers crossed!

  11. Among my most favorite. I’ve loved for nearly 25 years when I first discovered her cd. “ Time is a Healer”, “ Fields of Gold”, and “ Somewhere Over the Rainbow” are the best. But I love them all.

I want to see this documentary about Eva Cassidy. I got to meet Eva through a mutual friend Barbara Bullock, Bebe Earthsong on Facebook. Eva was SO COOL! She told me “I like to go to 7-11 to get my coffee, just like everyone else!”
