The Eva Cassidy Band’s playing at the time was essentially subservient to Eva’s voice: you’ll rarely hear an Eva fan comment on Keith Grimes’ marvellous guitar solos or Raice McLeod’s drum lick. There were no egos in this band. Chris Biondo, Lenny Williams, Keith Grimes and Raice McLeod allowed her to flourish and Eva felt safe with the guys around her. The boys wanted her to sound good and feel at ease. If Raice saw her shrinking on stage, he knew he was playing too loudly and would tone it down.

Chris Biondo says of the band: “There are four guys in a car. Suddenly they see a lonely girl walking along the road. The guys called to her: ‘Get in the car and we’ll take you to wherever you need to go.’” The Eva Cassidy Band was a means of transport for Eva to reach her destiny. Without the band she would have remained a hitchhiker all her life.”

Still, she continued to feel an element of uncertainty. She knew she could sing, but she always requested reverb. But she communicated the message of the songs so well that listeners reacted in a deeply emotional manner to her. She didn’t need gimmicks or special lighting: Eva could transform a room with her voice.

That voice will be missed at Maryland’s Hall Of Fame 10th December. Tickets are sold out.
